What Happens During a Facial? A Straightforward Guide for a First Visit
Step by step through a facial appointment, from the first chat about your skin to what you should and should not do…
About
The person who will actually be doing your facial, what she believes about skin, and why there is only ever one appointment in the diary at a time.
I run Tropical Facial Therapy from a treatment room at home in Verwood. One client at a time, no reception, no rush, and no sales pitch at the end.
I started doing this because I kept hearing the same thing from people about facials. That they had been made to feel their skin was a problem needing solving, or that they had left with a tight red face and a list of products they were expected to buy. Neither of those is what a facial should be.
What I actually think about skin is fairly simple. It behaves differently at different times, and most of the trouble people have with it comes from doing too much rather than too little. Over cleansing, over exfoliating, four new products in the same week. A lot of my job is talking people out of things rather than into them.
So your facial is built around what your skin is doing that week. Not a fixed routine, not the same four products used on everybody. If your skin is reactive, we go gently and skip the exfoliation. If it is congested and flat, we do more. If you have had a horrible month and mainly want an hour of quiet, that is a perfectly good reason to book and I will not talk through it.
How I work
Every appointment starts with a proper conversation about what your skin has been doing and what reacts. That answer changes the whole treatment.
If the honest answer is that your skin needs a month of being left alone, or that the £20 treatment is enough, that is what I will tell you.
No ingredient lists read at you and no jargon. You should leave knowing what was used and why, in language that makes sense.
I do sell Tropic products, and I will only mention them if you ask. A good routine with what you already own beats an expensive one you abandon.
Why Tropic
Because the formulas are kind to skin that reacts, and because I use them myself and would rather recommend something I actually understand than stock five brands I half know.
Tropic is cruelty free and vegan, made with plant based ingredients, and the range is broad enough that I can pick genuinely different products for dehydrated skin, congested skin and reactive skin rather than making one product do three jobs.
Using one range I know well means I can tell you exactly which two products out of everything I used made the difference for your skin, and which ones you can happily ignore. That is a more useful conversation than a shelf of options.
Questions
Stacey carries out every treatment personally. There is no team and no rota, so the person you speak to when you enquire is the person who does the facial.
It is a treatment room at a private home in Verwood, Dorset, with off road parking. The full address is shared once an appointment is confirmed, which is normal for a home studio.
It is usually the opposite. There is no waiting area, nobody else in, and no reception desk. Most people find a home studio considerably more relaxing than a salon once they have been the first time.
No. Tropic products are available if you want to carry the routine on at home, and they are only mentioned if you ask. Nothing is put in front of you at the end of the appointment.
Facials are the focus, along with the massage that forms part of every treatment. Pamper parties, skincare workshops and workplace wellness days are also available for groups.
