Mini Facial or Prescription Facial: Which One Should You Book?

Two treatments, £20 and £40, twenty five minutes and an hour. The price list makes the difference look purely like length, and it is not quite that simple. Here is what the extra half hour actually gets you, and which one to pick.

The short version

Book the Mini Facial if you want your skin cleaner, softer and brighter, and you want it to fit into a normal day.

Book the Prescription Facial if your skin needs more than a surface reset, or if the point of the appointment is as much about stopping as it is about your face.

What both treatments share

Neither is a stripped back version of the other. Both include a consultation, a double cleanse, exfoliation, toner, a serum chosen for your skin, massage, and a proper finish with eye serum, moisturiser, SPF and a lip product. Both use Tropic skincare, selected on the day rather than fixed in advance.

So the Mini Facial is not a taster with steps missing. It is a complete treatment done efficiently.

What the extra thirty minutes adds

Three things, and they are worth being specific about.

A treatment mask. This is the biggest single difference. A mask sits on the skin for several minutes and delivers considerably more hydration or more of whatever the skin needs than a serum alone. If your skin is dry, dehydrated or tight, this is the step that changes how it feels for the next few days rather than the next few hours.

A longer massage, over more of you. The Mini Facial covers face, neck and shoulders. The Prescription Facial extends across the décolletage as well and simply spends longer everywhere. This is where the tension that lives in the jaw, temples and the base of the neck actually lets go, and it is not something you can rush.

A scalp or hand and arm massage. While the mask works, rather than being left in silence, you choose one of these. It sounds like a small addition and it is the thing people talk about most afterwards.

Pick the Mini Facial if

• You have never had a facial and want to find out whether you like it before booking an hour
• Your skin is basically behaving and just looks a bit flat or feels congested
• You are fitting it around a school run, a lunch break or a shift
• You are keeping results going between longer treatments, which is the usual pattern
• You live nearby, in West Moors or Three Legged Cross for instance, so the drive is not the main cost of the trip

Pick the Prescription Facial if

• Your skin feels tight, flaky or dehydrated, which is a different problem to dry skin
• It has been stressed or reactive, and needs calming rather than working on
• You want an hour where nobody needs anything from you
• You are driving in from further out, from Wimborne or Fordingbridge, and want the appointment to justify the journey
• It is a gift, a birthday or the week before something that matters

The honest answer about value

Per minute, the two treatments cost almost exactly the same. So the question is not which is better value, it is which length actually suits what you need. Booking an hour when twenty five minutes would have done is money spent on relaxation, which is a perfectly good reason. Booking twenty five minutes when your skin genuinely needed a mask and a longer massage is the one that leaves people slightly underwhelmed.

What most people end up doing

A common pattern is a Prescription Facial to begin with, because starting with the longer treatment gives a much better read on what the skin actually needs, followed by Mini Facials every four to six weeks with a longer one when the seasons turn. Skin behaves quite differently in January than it does in July.
